My taste in Japanese food lacks sophistication.  The more expensive the food I am served, the less I am likely to enjoy it.  I am usually happiest with my mother-in-law's home cooking, or in a beer drinking establishment scarfing down grilled fish balls on a stick.  That said, here is the bounty that was laid before me.  Fortunately, a lot of beer and great sake was also laid before me, so I didn't have to eat it entirely sober.

Clockwise from the upper left:  1. empty rice bowl  2. bland, shiny walnut  3. pink, yellow processed fish patty
4. a dozen whole, tiny white minnows suspended in a rectangle of clear gelatin  5.  black pickled seaweed
7.  some sort of pink pickled vegetable  8. soramame (sky bean) soaked until soft and bland
9. quail egg on a bed of raw ground tuna served with dashi/soy sauce  10.  the dashi/soy sauce
11.  A moist towelette  12.  Chopsticks
